The green permit is the highest level permit. It gives students the most access to tools and machines including mills and lathes, with the exception of the specific equipment which requires an upgrade.
Complete the green permit quizzes and attend a virtual green permit seminar in CANVAS
Successfully complete the test piece (reserve machines through EMU and actually use the machines to make the part in the shop)
When you are finished with the virtual green seminar, you will need to successfully machine a test piece within specific tolerances in order to complete the green permit training.
The test piece is a simple hands-on test for individuals applying for the green permit to prove they have learned what was covered in the quizzes and seminar. There are two versions of the part, alpha and beta, and they are assigned to individuals more or less randomly when they arrive to make their part. Individuals who do not demonstrate sufficient skill on the equipment with their assigned part will be required to make the other part (i.e. if you made an alpha part first, you would make the beta part second).
To make the test piece reserve a lathe anda mill online (any available machine is acceptable) and then come to the TEAM Lab and make it. Individuals typically need at least two hours on each machine and the lathe should be reserved before the mill. The TEAM Lab will provide you with the metal you will be machining when you arrive.
when you have completed the virtual seminar, you will automatically be able to reserve a lathe and a mill to do your test piece in EMU
You will need to start with a two-hour reservation on a lathe, followed by a second, two-hour reservation on a mill. They do not have to be done on the same day.
Reservations can be adjusted by shop staff as necessary on the same day in the shop, as need and availability dictates.
We will supply all necessary tools, materials and safety glasses. Please show up dressed appropriately at your reserved time and swipe in at the window.
If you have not already completed the Red Permit, you will also need to complete the Red Permit training prior to machining your green permit test piece. It consists of watching a short video and making a simple part out of HDPE down in the TEAM Lab shop.
If there are no open Red Permit Seminars in EMU, please email the shop to arrange the training.
