Overview
Permit upgrades represent additional training available to individuals who have already obtained a permit. Upgrades are also a prerequisite for gaining access to equipment in the College of Engineering that presents certain hazards if used improperly.
Woodworking

Woodworking 1 Upgrade (Wood Saws)
Overview
The Woodworking 1 upgrade is an additional amount of training individuals can take to learn the proper use of a variety of woodworking saws (table saw, panel saw, circular saw, track saw, and miter saw). Individuals will not be allowed to use these saws until they have obtained the Woodworking 1 upgrade.
Privileges
- Use table saws (both traditional and SawStop)
- Use panel saws
- Use circular saws
- Use track saws
- Use miter saws
Time Frame
- Upgrades must be completed within 45 days of applying. Failure to meet the 45 day deadline will result in all progress towards the upgrade being removed
Steps to complete Woodworking 1

Woodworking 1 Seminar
This seminar will familiarize students with the safe operation of panel, miter, track, circular, and table saws (both conventional and SawStop) as well as simple glues and fasteners.

Overview
The Woodworking 2 upgrade is an additional amount of training individuals can take to learn how to safely use a variety of woodworking equipment (Jointer, Thickness planer, biscuit joiner, and router). Individuals will not be allowed to use this woodworking equipment until they have obtained the woodworking 2 upgrade.

This seminar will familiarize students with the safe operation of jointers, planers, routers, biscuit jointers, and dado blades as well as cover some basic joinery.

Woodworking 3 Seminar
This seminar will familiarize students with the safe turning of spindles (horizontal grain) and face work (perpendicular grain) using spurs, face plates, screw drives, chucks and live centers with a focus on carbide tools.

Overview
The Welding 1 upgrade is an additional amount of training individuals can take to learn how to safely setup and use plasma torches and MIG welders. Individuals will not be allowed to use plasma torches or MIG welders until they have obtained a Welding 1 upgrade.

This seminar will familiarize students with the safe operation and set-up of a plasma torch and a MIG welder. Students will also practice fillet, lap, and butt joints as well as plasma cutting.

Welding 2 Upgrade (TIG)

The Welding 2 upgrade is an additional amount of training individuals can take to learn how to safely setup and use a TIG welder. Individuals will not be allowed to use TIG welders until they have obtained a welding 2 upgrade.

Welding 2 Seminar
This seminar is split into two labs which generally occur on different days.
Lab 1:
Individuals will be taught the basics of TIG welding steel. This will include training in machine set-up, use of filler rod, and fusion welding beads, butt joints, lap joints, and T-welds.
Lab 2:
Individuals will be taught the basics of TIG welding aluminum. This will include training on machine set-up, use of filler rod and welding beads, butt joints, lap joints, and T-welds.

The Welding 3 upgrade is an additional amount of training individuals can take to learn how to safely setup and use a MIG spool gun to weld aluminum. Individuals will not be allowed to MIG weld aluminum until they have obtained a Welding 3 upgrade.

CNC Mill

CNC Mill 1 Upgrade (Conversational - Eisen)
Overview
This self-taught upgrade will cover basic conversational programming along with the standard canned programs (circular, rectangular pockets, rectangular frames, and bolt hole patterns) on the ProtoTRAK EMX controllers (staff will be available to answer any questions). ProtoTRAK EMX controllers are available on all Eisen mills. Individuals will not be allowed to program or use advanced controller features on a CNC mill until they have obtained a CNC Mill 1 upgrade.
Note: All of the programming is done at the machine. CAD/CAM software is not used.
Privileges
- Use conversational CNC machining on ProtoTRAK EMX equipped milling machines.
Time Frame
On average, individuals are able to complete CNC Mill 1 upgrade within 2 hours. If you’ve found your previous machining experiences to be challenging, anticipate needing more time.

CNC Mill 2 Upgrade (2 Axis - Trak DPM)
Overview
This self-taught upgrade will introduce individuals to 2 axis machining using CAM software generated G-code on a 2 axis CNC mill of their choice (staff will be available to answer any questions). Individuals will not be allowed to program or run a 2 axis CNC mill until they have obtained a CNC Mill 2 upgrade.
Privileges
- CNC Mill 2 – Trak DPM:
CAM programmed two axis CNC machining on a Trak DPM mill.
Note: This only gives access to the machine chosen. To use one of the other machines you would need to go through this process again for that machine.
Time Frame
On average, individuals are able to machine the CNC Mill 2 parts within 4 hours. If you’ve found your previous machining experiences to be challenging, consider reserving more time.

CAM Software
The College of Engineering currently supports MasterCAM which is the CAM software used to generate the G-code for this upgrade. While not required to complete this upgrade, it is recommend that individuals go through the “Learning MasterCAM” tutorial available for free through DoIT online training.
MasterCAM is available on all CAE lab computers. MasterCAM HLE is available for individuals to download to their personal computers. It has identical functionality to the version of MasterCAM found on CAE lab computers. Work can be saved and transferred to TEAM Lab staff in order to generate G-code.
CNC Mill 3 Upgrade (3 Axis - Trak DPM)
